You are approaching the Palais de la Cité, the site where the story of Paris as a royal capital truly began. Long before the grand monuments of later centuries appeared, this western tip of the island was the home of Roman governors. By the sixth century, the Merovingian kings chose this same strategic point to establish their residence, effectively planting the seeds of the French monarchy in the middle of the Seine.
