Colonne Vendôme

The Colonne Vendôme stands as a metallic monument to military triumph, yet its own history is defined by collapse and controversy. Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to celebrate his decisive victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, the column is a direct homage to Trajan’s Column in Rome. To create its signature appearance, artisans melted down over one thousand cannons captured from the Russian and Austrian armies. These melted weapons were transformed into four hundred and twenty-five bronze plates that spiral up the structure, detailing the intense battles of the Napoleonic Wars.
