The Palais de Justice stands on the Île de la Cité, the historic island in the middle of the Seine that served as the center of power in Paris long before the city expanded to its current size. This site began as a residence for Roman governors who recognized its strategic value as a defensible stronghold. Over centuries, the complex transformed into the primary royal palace of the French monarchy, housing kings who lived within these walls until the late fourteenth century. When the royal court finally relocated, the site retained its administrative importance, eventually cementing its status as the seat of the nation's highest judicial bodies.
