The Berlin Wall at Zimmerstraße stands as a ragged, exposed stretch of concrete, punctuated by the jagged iron rebar where scavengers once pried away souvenirs. This section sits exactly where the border fortifications sliced through the city, cutting off the southern edge of the Mitte district from Kreuzberg. In the early sixties, the wall here transformed from a simple barbed wire fence into a complex, multi-layered system of death strips, guard towers, and tripwires designed to halt anyone trying to cross to the west.
