Denkmal Rosenstraße

The Rosenstraße memorial consists of several upright, jagged blocks of red sandstone that stand in the middle of a small public square. In nineteen forty-three, the Gestapo arrested the remaining Jewish men in Berlin who were married to non-Jewish women. Their wives gathered here in front of this building, then a community center, and remained for a week. They chanted for the release of their husbands until the Nazis relented. The men walked free, and most of those who stayed behind survived the war.
