New Synagogue Berlin - Centrum Judaicum

The New Synagogue features a massive, shimmering golden dome that dominates the skyline of Oranienburger Strasse. When it opened in eighteen sixty-six, its Moorish Revival style and capacity for three thousand worshipers signaled the integration of the Jewish community into Berlin society. During the November Pogrom in nineteen thirty-eight, a local police officer named Wilhelm Krutzfeld arrived to stop the burning building from being destroyed. He stood his ground against Nazi paramilitary forces, allowing firefighters to put out the flames.
