National Museum of Ghana

The National Museum of Ghana features a low, horizontal facade of light-colored stone and wide, glass-paneled windows that distinguish it from the dense, vertical architecture nearby. Opened in nineteen fifty-seven, the building coincided with Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah envisioned this space to house artifacts that reclaimed the nation’s pre-colonial heritage. He personally inaugurated the collection, which includes ceremonial stools, gold weights, and traditional kente textiles, framing the museum as a physical manifestation of a newly sovereign African identity.
