Fusiliers' Arch

The Fusiliers' Arch stands at the Grafton Street entrance to St. Stephens Green, its four limestone columns framing the gateway like a smaller, defiant cousin to the Arc de Triomphe. It commemorates the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who died during the Second Boer War. When the arch opened in nineteen oh seven, some locals mocked its scale, dubbing it the Traitor's Gate because the soldiers fought for the British Empire. During the nineteen sixteen Easter Rising, bullets scarred the stone, leaving pockmarks still visible today.
