Piazza Giuseppe Verdi

Piazza Giuseppe Verdi features a wide, sloping stone pavement framed by the brick facade of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. In the late nineteenth century, the city demolished a medieval labyrinth of alleyways to create this open space, intending it as a grand foyer for the opera house. During the turbulent nineteen seventies, the square became a flashpoint for student protests, and the opera house doors were often barricaded against the crowds gathered outside on the uneven, sloping stones.
