Via dell'Inferno

The name Via dell'Inferno, or Hell Street, refers to the narrow, dark path that marked the center of Bologna's medieval Jewish Ghetto. In fifteen fifty-five, Pope Paul the Fourth ordered all Jews in the Papal States to move into segregated areas. City officials locked the gates of this quarter every night. The residents lived under these restrictive conditions until eighteen fifty-nine, when the walls finally came down. Today, the street remains a cramped corridor that feels disconnected from the wider city.
