Ponte alla Carraia

landmark

The Ponte alla Carraia spans the Arno River with three distinct, shallow stone arches that sit lower to the water than its neighbors. In thirteen oh four, the bridge hosted a festival where a massive crowd gathered to watch a theatrical performance of hell on the water. The wooden structure collapsed under the weight of the spectators, dropping the entire audience into the river. Many drowned that day, an event the chronicler Giovanni Villani described as a dark omen for the city.
