The Torre dei Gianfigliazzi stands out on the Lungarno Corsini with its dark, jagged stonework and a small, delicate balcony added centuries after the original construction. This fortress-house belonged to a powerful merchant family who made their fortune in the silk trade. In the thirteenth century, the Gianfigliazzi family fought for dominance in the city streets, building this tower to protect their wealth and their lives. One descendant, Gherardo, later served as a diplomat, hosting dignitaries within these stone walls during the Renaissance.
