The Hamamatsuya building sits along the old Tokaido road with a heavy, thatched gabled roof that dips low toward the street. Travelers once stopped here to exchange worn straw sandals for fresh pairs before tackling the steep mountain pass toward Hakone. The shopkeepers kept their business open through the nineteenth century, catering to the constant flow of pilgrims and merchants traveling between Edo and Kyoto. A wooden sign remains hanging above the entrance, still bearing the name of the original family business.
