Hatajuku Cafe Tsumugi sits in a renovated traditional kominka house, recognizable by the dark, weathered wooden beams and the wide, low-slung tiled roof that anchors it against the valley slope. This building once served as a residence for artisans practicing the Hatajuku Yosegi-zaiku, the precise Hakone wood-mosaic craft. When the family moved out, the structure faced demolition. A local resident bought it, stripped away decades of modifications, and opened the cafe to preserve the architecture and keep the local history visible.
