A distinctive low-slung building sits in Hatajuku, identifiable by the intricate geometric patterns of yosegi-zaiku woodwork displayed near the entrance. This workshop preserves a tradition born two centuries ago when a local craftsman named Ishikawa Nihei began arranging local Hakone timber into precise, decorative mosaics. Every piece here relies on the natural colors of different wood species, joined without dyes or paint. The rafters inside hold the history of this exacting craft, maintained by generations who continue to slice and glue timber here.
