Fushimi Inari Taisha Honden (Sanctuary)

The Honden at Fushimi Inari Taisha features a roof covered in thick layers of cedar bark, sloping down into a distinct, overhanging eave that protects the front veranda. This main sanctuary serves as the residence for the Shinto deity of rice and agriculture. While visitors often rush through the thousands of vermilion gates, the Honden is where priests perform daily rituals, chanting prayers for prosperous harvests and successful businesses. An early fire destroyed the original structure, and the current building dates to fourteen ninety-nine.
