Rankyo Gorge

Rankyo Gorge is a jagged canyon carved by the Hozugawa River where the water creates a sharp S-curve against towering rock faces. Its distinctive feature is the sheer cliff walls that rise abruptly from the riverbed, often colored by dense maple and cherry trees. Centuries ago, local merchants navigated these treacherous rapids to transport charcoal and grain to Kyoto. A boatman once lost his entire cargo here, forcing a daring rerouting of the channel that established the modern passage through the gorge.
