Togetsukyō Bridge

The Togetsukyō Bridge spans the Katsura River with a clean, low profile of wood and reinforced concrete. Its name translates to the Moon Crossing Bridge, inspired by an emperor who watched the full moon appear to travel across the sky between the mountains above the water. A bridge has stood here since the ninth century, though the current structure dates to nineteen thirty-four. Workers once discovered a massive stone pillar nearby, buried deep enough to suggest a much older, structural foundation.
