Jōjakkōji Temple

The mossy stone steps of Jōjakkōji Temple climb directly up the side of Mount Ogura. The temple grounds rely on the natural slope of the mountainside rather than flat ground, forcing visitors to ascend through a dense canopy of maple trees to reach the main hall. In sixteen oh six, a high-ranking priest named Nisshin moved here from a different temple to live in quiet seclusion. He dismantled his former home and moved the materials up the mountain to build this retreat.
