Omoide Yokocho Memory Lane

Omoide Yokocho consists of a dense, narrow network of alleys packed with wooden stalls and flickering lanterns, wedged tightly against the western tracks of Shinjuku Station. It emerged in the chaotic months after nineteen forty-five as an informal black market. People built these stalls from salvaged scrap wood and charcoal, selling offal and cheap spirits to weary commuters. The narrow passages remain exactly as they were in the postwar era, a tiny fragment of old Tokyo surviving amidst the towering glass skyscrapers.
