The stone torii gate at the entrance to Hanazono Shrine stands out against the neon glare of Shinjuku because it is painted a vivid, singular vermilion. This is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari, the deity of fertility and worldly success. In the late nineteen sixties, the underground theater group Situation Theater pitched a red tent on these grounds to perform provocative plays, turning the shrine into a hub for Japan’s counterculture. The shrine remains a place where business owners pray for prosperity today.
