The Naga Yon Hpaya stands out for the stone naga king that curls protectively around the central Buddha image. According to legend, King Kyansittha built this temple after a giant serpent, or naga, sheltered him from the hot sun while he slept as an exile. The temple occupies a unique position in the Bagan landscape because its inner corridor contains a continuous gallery of terracotta plaques. Kyansittha dedicated his life to these walls, and his image remains carved into the stone.
