The Church of Saint Joseph is recognizable by its heavy stone facade, which stands out against the colorful colonial buildings of Casco Viejo. Inside, the church holds a massive baroque altar covered in thick gold leaf. Legend says that in sixteen seventy-one, when the pirate Henry Morgan attacked Old Panama, local monks painted the altar black to hide its value. The ruse worked, and the pirates spared the treasure, which was later moved here when the city was rebuilt on this peninsula.
