The Plaza de Francia features a distinctive circular colonnade of white limestone that anchors the very tip of the Casco Viejo peninsula. This square commemorates the French attempt to build a canal across the isthmus in the eighteen eighties. Thousands of workers died from malaria and yellow fever during that struggle, and the plaza serves as their memorial. Ferdinand de Lesseps, the man who led the failed French effort, once had a bust positioned here, staring out toward the unfinished ditch he left behind.
