People’s Park features a central monument topped by a golden statue of a worker, a soldier, and a peasant. Established in nineteen eleven, it stands as the first public park in Chengdu. Local residents once paid for entry here by selling their own hair or scrap metal during a grassroots fundraising campaign to reclaim the land from foreign interests. Today, this space functions as the city’s living room, where tea houses serve jasmine tea and thousands of people gather daily to dance or practice calligraphy.
