The Wenshu Yuan Monastery features a series of tiled roofs with sweeping, upturned eaves that rise above the surrounding neighborhood. It originated as a tenth-century temple, though the current structures largely date from the Qing Dynasty. During the turmoil of the seventeenth century, a monk named Cidu lived among the ruins here. Legend claims that when he died, his body burned to ash and an image of the deity Wenshu appeared in the flames, prompting the local governor to establish the monastery.
