The granite walls of the Fonseca lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia hold a stillness that contrasts with the steep, narrow streets outside. Rows of massive oak casks sit in the dim, cool air, aging port wine according to methods established in eighteen fifteen. When a massive flood swept through the Douro Valley in eighteen seventy-two, the firm lost nearly their entire stock. They survived by blending remaining barrels with intense focus, creating a vintage that cemented their reputation for quality during a crisis.
