The Sandeman cellar is marked by a black silhouette of a man in a wide-brimmed Portuguese hat and a flowing Spanish cape. George Sandeman founded the company in London in seventeen ninety, but he shipped his port wine from these stone buildings in Vila Nova de Gaia. In nineteen twenty-eight, the company hired George Massiot Brown to create that mysterious figure. He combined a student cape from Coimbra with a flat-brimmed sombrero from Jerez to represent the brand’s reach.
