Aljibe de la Plaza del Salvador

The Aljibe de la Plaza del Salvador sits tucked into the corner of the square, recognizable by its exposed brick facade and the wide, pointed horseshoe arch that marks the entrance to a buried stone vault. Built in the eleventh century, this cistern held fresh water for the neighborhood long before Granada had modern plumbing. When the engineer Leopoldo Torres Balbas uncovered it during the nineteen thirties, he found it still connected to the original medieval channels that brought mountain water into the city.
