The Church of San Antonio Abad distinguishes itself with a deep red facade tucked into the narrow streets of the Alfalfa neighborhood. While its origins trace back to a fourteenth century hospital for the plague-stricken, the current building mostly dates to the seventeen hundreds. Inside, the brotherhood of El Silencio keeps a seventeenth century carving of Jesus carrying the cross. Every year, they carry this statue through the city in total darkness, a tradition that silent followers have maintained since the middle ages.
