Plaza Pumarejo features a central fountain surrounded by uneven, yellow-toned facades that lean slightly toward the open square. This plaza served as the gateway to the city for travelers arriving from the north for centuries. In nineteen hundred and one, Josefa Vargas y Jaraba turned her family mansion here into a charity hospice for the poor. She spent her entire personal fortune feeding those who gathered at the doors, eventually forcing her family to sell the building to maintain the neighborhood's daily bread.
