Khaosan Road is a four hundred meter stretch of pavement lined with narrow shophouses and guesthouses. It began as a center for the city's rice trade, taking its name from the Thai word for milled rice. By the early nineteen eighties, the neighborhood evolved into a makeshift hub for budget travelers after a few local families opened rooms to those passing through. Backpackers occupied the empty shop spaces, trading travel tips and cheap meals while they waited for their next connection across Southeast Asia.
