Old Devonshire House

Old Devonshire House stood at forty-eight Boswell Street as a prime example of Stuart-era architecture. Built in sixteen sixty-eight, the house emerged from the strict building codes established by the Rebuilding of London Act following the Great Fire of sixteen sixty-six. These regulations mandated brick or stone construction and precise wall thicknesses to prevent future city-wide infernos, resulting in the sturdy, well-proportioned structure that stood here for centuries.
