Sir John Soane was an architect who did not merely inhabit his home at Lincoln's Inn Fields, but transformed it into a vessel for his obsessive and eclectic collecting. Born the son of a bricklayer, he rose to become a master of neo-classical design, yet his true legacy is the residence he spent decades meticulously reconfiguring. He purchased three adjoining townhouses and systematically demolished and rebuilt them to serve as a living gallery for his vast hoard of antiquities, paintings, and architectural models. By the time he was finished, he had created a labyrinthine space of sliding walls, hidden skylights, and mirrored ceilings that defy the conventional constraints of a London rowhouse. This house was his private world, designed to inspire students and preserve his artistic vision long after he was gone.
