Shakespeare's Globe

The original Globe Theatre was born from a desperate act of rebellion in fifteen ninety-eight. When the landlord of the Lord Chamberlain's Men refused to renew their lease on their previous playhouse, the company decided to take the building with them. During the cold days of the Christmas season, they dismantled their theater timber by timber, ferried the wood across the Thames, and rebuilt it on the marshy ground of Southwark. They strategically chose this location because it fell outside the jurisdiction of London city officials, who frequently harassed theaters for being rowdy and immoral.
