The Anchor, Bankside

The Anchor pub stands on the site of a tavern where William Shakespeare likely drank during the years his plays were performed at the nearby Globe Theatre. When the original building burned down during the Great Fire of London in sixteen sixty-six, the structure was rebuilt with thick timber frames to prevent the flames from spreading further along the riverbank.
