Tower of London

William the Conqueror began the construction of this site in ten sixty-six, shortly after his victory at the Battle of Hastings. He intended to build a fortress that would dominate the London skyline and intimidate the local population. The central White Tower was finished around ten seventy-eight, constructed from limestone imported across the English Channel from Caen in Normandy. This massive stone structure served as the primary defensive keep, marking the transition from simple wooden fortifications to a permanent seat of royal power.
