Tower Bridge

As you approach Tower Bridge, look closely at the lamp posts on the northern approach. You might notice that one of them is missing its lamp entirely, which is because it is actually a disguised chimney. It once served a guard room located directly beneath the bridge, venting smoke from a coal fire that kept the guards warm while they monitored the river traffic. Following the Clean Air Act of nineteen fifty-six, the fireplace was decommissioned, leaving this hidden chimney to stand as a silent relic of the bridge's early operational days.
