The Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret is housed in the attic of a seventeenth century church that once served the original St Thomas Hospital. You are entering a space that was used as a literal herb store, where apothecaries dried and cured medicinal plants for the sick. In eighteen twenty-two, this storage area was expanded to include an operating theatre for women. It remains the oldest surviving surgical theatre in Europe.
