The Shard takes its name from a sharp-tongued critique delivered by English Heritage during the planning process in two thousand two. Officials at the time condemned the proposed structure as a shard of glass through the heart of historic London. Rather than fighting the label, the development team embraced the insult, and the name became the official identity of the building.
