Beyond the Deepening Shadow

Beyond the Deepening Shadow was a large-scale public art installation staged in the moat surrounding the Tower of London to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. For eight nights leading up to Armistice Day in two thousand eighteen, the dry moat became a place of commemoration where ten thousand individual flames were lit. This ritual transformed the landscape into a circle of light that radiated outward from the fortress, serving as a visual tribute to the lives lost during the conflict. The choice of the moat held a particular historical weight, as it was the exact ground where soldiers from the London battalions gathered and received their equipment before departing for the front lines.
