Christ Church Spitalfields

Christ Church Spitalfields stands as a monumental work of English Baroque architecture, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and completed in 1729. It was commissioned by Parliament under the 1711 Act to build fifty new churches across London, a move intended to project Anglican authority over an area rapidly filling with Huguenot silk weavers and various religious dissenters. The architect created a powerful, brooding presence that dominates the street, featuring a massive, blunt portico and a soaring stone steeple that blends classical Roman forms with a traditional English silhouette.
