Southbank Centre

The Southbank Centre emerged from the ashes of the Second World War as a deliberate attempt to lift the national spirit. It began as the centerpiece of the 1951 Festival of Britain, a nationwide event designed to showcase progress and optimism while the city was still clearing rubble. The Royal Festival Hall stands as the only permanent structure from that original exhibition site.
