The building you are approaching began its life as a royal residence for Edward the Confessor in the eleventh century. While today it is the center of British political life, it was not originally designed to house a parliament. Because it served as a palace rather than a seat of government, early legislative meetings took place in whichever rooms were available, often forcing royals and officials to share space in places like the Painted Chamber or the Queen's Chamber.
