Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Parliament Square

The bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square stands nine feet tall, commemorating a leader who famously challenged British colonial rule. Sculptor Philip Jackson created the likeness based on a 1931 photograph of Gandhi taken outside the office of the British Prime Minister. The figure is shown wearing his characteristic shawl and loincloth, which contrasts sharply with the formal suits and military uniforms worn by the many other political figures depicted in the square. This choice of attire highlights his identity as a man of the people rather than an official of the state.
