Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace stands on land that once served a completely different purpose under King James the First, who planted mulberry trees here in an attempt to cultivate silkworms. This royal enterprise failed because the King planted the wrong type of mulberry tree, leaving the grounds to eventually become a private townhouse site. By seventeen hundred and three, John Sheffield, the first Duke of Buckingham, demolished the existing house to build the original core of what we see today. Continue
