The Photographers' Gallery

The Photographers' Gallery was born from the personal conviction of Sue Davies, who famously took out a second mortgage on her own home to secure the funds needed to launch it in 1971. At the time, she was deeply frustrated by the lack of serious, institutional attention given to photography as a legitimate art form. Her mission was to create a dedicated space where the medium could be studied, debated, and displayed with the same reverence as painting or sculpture. She succeeded in establishing the first public gallery in the entire United Kingdom devoted solely to photography.
