The Wallace Collection stands as a monument to one of the most remarkable private art acquisitions in European history. Housed within the walls of Hertford House, this museum preserves the immense collection amassed by four generations of the Marquess of Hertford family and their confidant, Sir Richard Wallace. Before it became a public gallery in nineteen hundred, this building served as a grand residence where the family lived among their vast treasures. The collection remains today largely as it was when the widow of Sir Richard Wallace bequeathed it to the British nation in eighteen ninety-seven, ensuring that the thousands of paintings, arms, and pieces of furniture remain together in their original home.
