In the fifteen thirties, the monarch seized the area from the Abbess of Barking, transforming over five hundred acres of woodland into a fenced chase protected by a ditch and rampart. This enclosure kept his red and fallow deer contained while successfully barring unwanted poachers from the king's private sport.
