Liberty (department store)

landmark

The building you are approaching is famous for being constructed from the timber of two decommissioned Royal Navy warships, the HMS Hindustan and the HMS Impregnable. When the store was completed in nineteen twenty-four, the architects intentionally utilized over twenty-four thousand cubic feet of salvaged oak and teak to frame the structure. The flooring beneath your feet as you walk through the store was once the actual decking of those historic ships. This nautical design reflects the original founder's vision of creating a merchant ship that had permanently docked in the heart of London to unload luxury goods from around the world.
